Not only has polarized sunglasses technology helped to protect eyes from harmful rays and assisted in poor glare situations like skiing and driving but it has aided tremendiously in other serious sports like fishing. Here is a quote from Matt Crawfield, the Free Press Outdoors editor:

"With polarized sunglasses, I can find weed beds, submerged logs and boulders that offer fish the protection they need. My glasses let me see stumps and shoals -- underwater hazards that would surely rip the lower unit off my Yamaha outboard if I motored over them unaware. My glasses let me spy schools of feeding baitfish and allow me to find nests of spawning fish carved into a river's bottom."

Various brands have carved out niches based on glare eliminating needs. Hobie targets the watersports market especially surfing. Oakley has a line of sunglasses for just about every need including watersports, baseball, and auto. Arnette has a line that they use to target the needs of road and mountain bikers. Maui Jims have a line that targets boaters.
